(Osseo, MN)— March 5th, 2024 — Alasan Ann, a Minnesota native, is poised to make history as he steps onto the world stage to represent Team Gambia in the sport of Taekwondo at the 2024 Olympics. His journey has been one of resilience, determination, and unwavering support.
A Dream Since Childhood
Alasan Ann, raised right here in the heartland, attended Fernbrook Elementary, Osseo Middle, and Maple Grove High School before pursuing his education at Saint Mary’s University in Winona. Growing up, he found his passion in Taekwondo at the World Taekwondo Academy under the guidance of Grandmaster Lee. By the age of 12, he dared to dream of competing in the Olympics.
Triumphs and Challenges
Through years of hard work, dedication, and countless hours of training, Alasan earned his spot on the US National Team, becoming a 5-time US National Champion and securing victories in various competitions. But when the opportunity arose to represent his father’s homeland, The Gambia, a new chapter began. With unwavering family support, he pursued this historic chance, qualifying for the Olympic Trials.
Overcoming Adversity
Then, tragedy struck. Just four months before the Olympic Qualifications, Alasan was accidentally shot in the leg, a victim of random violent act. In an instant, his dreams were shattered. Faced with uncertainty and wounds, he pressed forward. By the grace of God and the unwavering support of his family, coach, and well-wishers, Alasan persevered.
“We Qualified!”
“We made it to the Trials, and WE QUALIFIED!” Alasan exclaimed. Now, he stands not just with a dream but with an opportunity. Now he’s ready to make on the world stage and chase the ultimate prize: Olympic gold.
Join the Journey
This arduous journey, fueled by passion and resilience, proves that dreams, even when shattered, can be rebuilt. A Go Fund Me Page has been set up if you’d like to help. At the time of this writing, Alasan’s page had 108 donations and had raised just over $7500 with a goal of $35,000. Every contribution, big or small, pushes Alasan closer to realizing that dream.
Even though he’ll be on The Gambia Olympic Team, Minnesota has another athlete to cheer on during the 2024 Olympics.
