Marshall Community Rallies for Sue Morton’s Annual ‘Big Swim’

Sue Morton's Annual 'Big Swim'

(Marshall, MN) — December 24th, 2024 — The Marshall area YMCA, serving not only Marshall but also the surrounding communities, is lucky to have Sue Morton, a dedicated swim lesson and water aerobics instructor with over 54 years of experience. At 78 years old, Sue is the main instructor and coordinates the swim lesson schedule. Known for her phenomenal teaching skills, Sue is loved by her students and class participants. She can be found at the YMCA almost every day, either leading classes or helping younger lifeguards and instructors.

Sue’s remarkable life includes being a cancer survivor, a Master Gardener who shares her extensive knowledge, and an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, breaking down barriers and mitigating hate. Each year, Sue puts on an annual event known as ‘Sue’s Big Swim,’ where she swims as many laps as her age to celebrate her and her twin brother’s birthday. All proceeds from this event go to the Y Partners Scholarship program.

However, this year presents a bigger challenge for Sue. Her husband is facing health issues, her daughter has recently undergone major hip surgery and requires extra care, and her son has just received a cancer diagnosis and needs assistance getting to treatments. Mentally and physically, Sue is not able to complete the swim as she always has.

In response, the Marshall YMCA community is coming together to support Sue by continuing her annual event and helping to swim laps for her. The community aims to spread Sue’s story and cheer her on in the biggest way possible to help the cause that has been near and dear to her heart for so many years.

“Sue has proven that it does not matter what age or what challenges one faces, anything is possible with the support of others,” said a representative from the YMCA. “We want to show our love and support by continuing her tradition and making sure the Y Partners Scholarship program benefits as it always has.”
