Breaking New Ground: Celebrate Summer Meadows Ground Blessing with Habitat

Alexandria, MN  — June 24, 2024 Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County is thrilled to announce a ground blessing ceremony for Summer Meadows, the largest and most impactful affordable housing project in our 27-year history. Join us for this momentous occasion at 10 am on July 9, 2024, at the south end of the Summer Meadows site, near the intersections of Summer Lane NE and Seasons Drive NE. All are welcome!

The 2023 City of Alexandria Housing Update calls out the need for 8 to 10 affordable homes built annually, and recognized Habitat as well-positioned to meet this need. Summer Meadows will be Alexandria’s first affordable housing development since 2002, serving homeowners earning 80% or below of the area median income for Douglas County. Located in a highly desirable neighborhood in Alexandria, the development will allow 42 affordable homes to be built over the next 10 years, with four to five homes built each year.

“Through support from the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Area Economic Development Council, Summer Meadows is a shining example of what is possible when people come together to support a transformative project,” said Lori Anderson, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County. “Habitat remains dedicated to providing affordable housing solutions, enabling families to achieve the dream of homeownership. This ground blessing ceremony is not just a milestone for the Habitat families but a significant step towards a stronger community, united in building brighter futures for families.”

Habitat’s vision is a world in which everyone has a decent and affordable place to call home. Over the past 27 years, Habitat has served 175 families to build or improve their place to live. The Summer Meadows development will provide families with an affordable home, and a neighborhood with easy access to bike trails and an existing park. Like our future homeowners, Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County is dreaming big and courageously broadening our horizons to serve more people. Homeownership is a life-changing opportunity, and it is impossible without you: a community that believes we can do better.

Join us as we break ground and build hope for a brighter future.
